Why you and your partner can't decide what to eat

The nightly “what do you want? I dunno, you pick” loop isn't about food. What's really going on, and a few ways out of it.

If you live with someone, you know the loop. “What do you want for dinner?” “I dunno, what do you want?” “I asked you.” Ten minutes later nothing is decided and everyone is a little annoyed. For such a small question, it causes a surprising amount of friction.

Nobody wants to be the decider

Picking dinner means owning it. If it's great, fine. If it's just okay, you're the one who chose the just-okay dinner. So both people punt, hoping the other will take the risk. The result is a standoff where the safest move is to not choose at all.

You're both just tired

It rarely happens at noon. It happens at the end of the day, when you've both spent your decision-making on work, errands, and everything else. The question isn't hard because the stakes are high. It's hard because you're running on empty.

Ways out of the loop

  • Externalize it. Let something other than a person make the call: a rotation, a list, a coin, an app. If the system picked, nobody is to blame.
  • Decide together, fast. Instead of one person proposing and the other vetoing, both of you react to the same short set of options at once.
  • Take turns by night, not by meal. “You pick Mondays, I pick Tuesdays” removes the negotiation entirely.
  • Lower the stakes out loud. Most dinners are forgettable, and that's fine. Naming that takes the pressure off picking the perfect one.

Make the agreement the fun part

The nicest version of solving this turns the decision into a tiny game you both play. You each swipe through the same options, and the first thing you both say yes to wins. It's quick, it's blame-free, and the match itself feels good, like you found something together instead of settling.

That's why Relish is built for two from the first screen. One of you snaps the receipt, you both swipe, and the first match is dinner. The standoff just doesn't happen.

Let Relish settle it tonight.
